Zhouzhuang is located 20 miles SE of Suzhou and 45 miles from Shanghai but is worlds away in atmosphere and lifestyle. Stepping into this tiny township is like stepping back into China’s past. Women still wear traditional costumes and head coverings as they spin and weave handicrafts or sip "Grandmother’s Tea." . Zhouzhuang narrow streets are lined with charming old houses, archways and stone bridges dating back to the 14th century.The village is invitingly beautiful. romantic, tranquil and enchanting. Except for it’s size—about .3 square mile—it’s reminiscent of Venice, with riverbanks coming right up to the edge of the street. Zhouzhuang seems to float on the waterways surrounding it. The best way to tour, in fact, is to glide along the waterways in one of the small rowboats for hire. Relax as you enjoy the beauty of the natural environment and gently flowing rivers. The area is celebrated for the quality it’s rice crops and many thriving breweries. If you sample the liquors, be sure to reserve equal time for sampling the region’s fine foods, including Zhouzhuang’s most famous delicacy, Wansan’s Pig’s Upper Leg.

Bamboo ware, from full size beds to compact baskets, bronze braziers and woven handicrafts will be of interest to shoppers and collectors.
