Zhouzhuang
is located 20 miles SE of Suzhou and 45 miles from Shanghai but is worlds
away in atmosphere and lifestyle. Stepping into this tiny township is
like stepping back into Chinas past. Women still wear traditional
costumes and head coverings as they spin and weave handicrafts or sip
"Grandmothers Tea." . Zhouzhuang narrow streets are lined
with charming old houses, archways and stone bridges dating back to the
14th century. The village is invitingly beautiful. romantic, tranquil and
enchanting. Except for its sizeabout .3 square mile its
reminiscent of Venice, with riverbanks coming right up to the edge of
the street. Zhouzhuang seems to float on the waterways surrounding it.
The best way to tour, in fact, is to glide along the waterways in one
of the small rowboats for hire. Relax as you enjoy the beauty of the natural
environment and gently flowing rivers. The area is celebrated for the
quality its rice crops and many thriving breweries. If you sample
the liquors, be sure to reserve equal time for sampling the regions
fine foods, including Zhouzhuangs most famous delicacy, Wansans
Pigs Upper Leg.
Bamboo
ware, from full size beds to compact baskets, bronze braziers and woven
handicrafts will be of interest to shoppers and collectors.
