Silk Alley (Xiu Shui), is an exciting, bazaar-like atmosphere located very close to the US Embassy. It is very crowded, so watch your purse and billfold. It is a safe place, but remember that pickpockets are not totally unique to America. You can bargain, so be sure to check the quality of the product. Most dealers speak English, and expect you to haggle with them. It is like a game, and usually the product can be obtained at less than half of their asking price. Much of the clothing offered can be obtained in the larger sizes, especially for men. XL, XXL, and sometimes, XXXL are common. If you are looking for silk clothing, and are going on the extended tour to Suzhou, you may be better off waiting until you visit the Silk City. At Suzhou, a larger variety at lower prices can be found in the shopping areas specializing in silk items.
