The Peking Opera

A MUST see for everyone visiting Beijing. This ancient art form is colorful, sad, humorous and immensely entertaining. During the reign of terror, created by Madam Mao and the Gang of Four, the Opera was discontinued for the first time in its long history. Many of the writers, artists, performers and other intellectuals were forced to work in the countryside. You may, if you wish, rent head phones that will translate the words into English.

Traveler's Tip:
In addition to watching the Opera watch the faces and expressions of the Chinese patrons. The Chinese love, adore, and enjoy their Opera as much as the Europeans care for their art form of Opera.
