Shanghai
has long been the eastern gateway seaport to China. THE BUND is a symbol
of Shanghai, and a must see for any and all visitors to Shanghai. Bounded
on the east by the Huangpu River, a wide avenue curving along the western
bank of the Huangpu River is dominated on one side by an imposing line
of buildings that gives you the feeling you are in Europe. This impressive
Avenue is the best known of all streets in Shanghai, and is called "The
BUND or Waitan in Chinese". The varied style of buildings is accentuated
by lighting at night, which gives it the appearance of a dazzling palace.
Across
the street from the BUND are the banks of the Huangpu River where you
can get an excellent view of the fine architecture and the rapidly growing
area called Pudong. The banks of the river serve the purpose of preventing
flooding, but for morning exercisers, and evening strollers it is a place
of beauty and relaxation.
